Norfolk Island -
A Brief Overview of our Political HistoryAnd so began the Journey Back to Internal Self-Government that the Pitcairners originally enjoyed before they came to this fair Isle .........
An elected Parliament with nine independent Members was to be inaugurated. Ministers to be elected by their peers to govern on their behalf, and on behalf of the Norfolk Island Community. Ministers to be answerable to the Parliament and to the Community.
A Parliament with power to make laws specifically for Norfolk Island. A Parliament with power to carry out a wide range of functions. To carry out federal-type activities such as customs, immigration and social welfare. And to carry out local government type activities - roads, footpaths and bridges.
1979 - the year that the Norfolk Island Parliament was "reborn"...10th August, 1979. A day to be marked clearly in the history books of the Pitcairn/Norfolk Island/Bounty Mutiny saga.
10th August, 1979. The day the descendants of those Bounty Mutineers gave thanks in their own inimitable way - through Prayer - that the struggles of their forefathers had not been in vain.
10th August, 1979. The day the descendants of the Bounty Mutineers can remember that the journey of their ancestors - though often stormy and troubled - was nevertheless one that was travelled with national pride. "Royalists... Loyalists", passionate about their Bounty heritage, passionate about their Pitcairn Anthem; passionate about their monarchy... passionate people.
The story now told - albeit brief - we leave you now to further explore our history in other ways and invite you to view our Legislative Assembly website.
